“Whatever is going on here Bertie?” “Hi Posh, it’s Sky and his friend Harrod, they found a load of nice books on some shelves and have been reading them to all the other bears.” “Really? Sky and Harrod reading?” “Yes Posh, they have been doing it for ages but are taking a rest at the moment.” “I didn’t know that Sky could read and I’ve never seen either of them reading before.” Sky looked up and then at Posh. “I can read, in fact, I’m a good reader Posh.” “I never knew Sky, so you know all these words then?” “Words? Oh them, no I don’t bother with them for there are just too many to learn.” “So, you can’t read Sky.” “I can Posh, I read the pictures, so I don’t need to read the words. It’s an “either/or” option when they make books like this you see.” “Either/or option? What are you on about Sky?” “Either you read the words or you read the pictures. No need to read both as that would be like reading the story twice over. That would be so silly.” “No, no, no Sky, the pictures are there to enhance the reading of the words.” Said Posh stubbornly. “I don’t need the words entrancing Posh, as I don’t look at them.” “I said enhance not entrance. Let me read one of the stories to you Sky and you’ll see what I mean.” They all sat around listening as Posh read a wonderful story called “One Magical Morning by Claire Freedman” to them. They were all quite excited as he told them about a big bear and her baby walking through the forest on summer’s morning and all the flowers and animals they met along the way. “Now do you see how the words enhance the pictures of the story Sky?” “Not really Posh, the story you just read to everyone was alright but it missed out all the best bits it had in it when I read it.” “Tell him Bertie, tell him that it isn’t a story without words.” Said an exasperated Posh bear. “Well, Posh I have listened to what you read out and I also listened to what Sky said when looking at the pictures and I do think that both were very good. What Sky did was use his imagination Posh, he invented a story around the pictures and that has to be a good thing whether you are a young bear, hooman, buzzy thing, dog or whatever. He’ll learn how to read in time but for now I kind of think he is doing all right.” “Well, I suppose you could say that Bertie, I hadn’t thought of it that way.” Said Posh Bear. “Posh, could it be because you only read the words and didn’t read the pictures?” Asked Sky giggling.
