Often falsely called acacia, the black locust or false acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia) is an extremely widespread perennial deciduous tree from the bean family (Fabaceae) which can grow to a height of 25-30 metres. It is a slim straight tree, with quite a wide crown formed from twisted branches. It can spread by underground shoots or suckers which grow off the roots, and which therefore become copses. The trunk is greyish brown, with a thick longitudinally deeply furrowed bark . Young branches and shoots are spiny, which protect them from herbivores. I'm a mine of information on obscure trees! :-))
