Be nice to each other!!!! x. " Óna chéile ach í gcónaí le chéile! " Apart but always together! Pádraig. ....................................................................................................................... Dusk falls along the historic South Bull Wall, Sandymount, Dublin. The development of Dublin Port, the South Bull Wall, the North Bull Wall and Bull Island were very much down to the foresight and influence of Capt William Blyth of Mutiny on the Bounty infamy! Here is a song from the streets of Dublin written back in the 1800s about this area that children used to sing about. Its a true and somwhat cruel tawdry tale, a bit like "Ring a Ring a roses, we all fall down," which is about the Plague that children still sing here when they are playing in the school yard. There are lots of words in this song that are in Dublin slang which I will try to explain; " The Twangman" " Come listen to my story now, My good friends one and all. When the Militia wasnt wantin` him, He dealt in Hawkin` twang , He courted a lovely maiden, As fair as any midge , And she kept a Treacly Pot, One side of the Carlisle Bridge, " Now another one came courting her, And his name was Billy the Bags, He was a commercial traveller, And he dealt in bones and rags, He took her out to "Sandymount, " For to see the waters roll, And he won the heart of the Twangmans mot, Playing " Billy in the Bowl ", " Now when the Twangman heard of this, He flew into a rage, And swore by the contents of his twang cart, On him he`d have revenge, So he lay in wait by James`s Gate, Till the poor auld Bags came up, And with his twang knife he took the life, Of the poor auld "Gather-em-up" " Well now you`ve heard me [ my ] story, And I hope you`ll be good men, And not go chasin` the Twangman`s daughter, Or any other auld hen, For she`ll leave you without a brass farthing, Not even your auld sack of rags, And you`ll end up in the gutter just, Like poor auld Billy the Bags!. " Explaination; First verse; Twangman= Scrap Metal dealer. Militia; Police. Midge; Nymph/ Fairy Treacly Pot; Pot of pitch or Tar used for patching roofs, roads and as a damp proof. Carlile Bridge; Now O Connel Bridge. Originally called after Lord Carlile during British occuparion.,_5th_Earl_of_Carlisle Second verse; " playing Billy in the Bowl " A homeless Dublin man who lived rough though the locals were very good to him. He was born with no legs but someone got a tin bath and put 4 castor wheels on it. He would sit in it and was able to propel himself along the street by using his hand and arms He had very strong muscular arms and hands obviously as he had developed great upper body strength. He got involved in a fight one night in Monto [Monthgomery Street, [ a red light area ] with a Spanish sailor concerning a lady of the night and he strangled him. He was hung for his crime Third verse; James`s Gate: Guinness`s Brewery. The word "Auld" is pronounced "Owl-ed" and means "Old". I hope you like the photo and the song. Do keep safe out there. Avoid all places of temptation, Wear loose clothing, Change your underware at least ones a week whether you need to or not and wear heavy Pyjamas! Do enjoy yourselves! Now go and wash your hands!!!!! Properly!!! Lol! Distance Hugs! Pat. Wow!!! I dont know what to say really as this has taken off like a rocket. within just a few hoursI dont know whether its the photo or the song but hopefully both. Thank you all so much. Heres something that I really should have put up with it. Its called " Ringend Rose " and its from a working class area close to where the photo was taken. I served my time with the wonderful men from Ringsend who were all total characters and went to no end of trouble to teach me their skill and for no reward really as I was far from being the brighest match in the box!. I am forever in their debt and hold them and the people of Ringsend with the deepest respect and affection. They speak in this Dublin dialect and thats how I understand it. They call every man or boy"Son" and every Woman "Missus" whether they are married or not!! Lol! They love their City and are fiercly loyal and patriotic about Ireland. They are indeed rarer than the rarest!!! Bless them! This song was written by Shay Healy who was a camera man in RTE tv. He wrote so much stuff including " Whats another Year " for Johnny Logan who won the Eurovision 3 times with Shay`s songs! He wrote Ringsend Rose and Brendan Grace heard him sing it in a Dublin pub. He asked could he borrow it as he wanted to release it as a single. Shay said he was mad and it would never get anywhere! How wrong was he! It went mega. Im not going to tell you why as its obvious really and it "destroys me" every time I hear it. Have a read and a listen: Ringend Rose In Dublin town,[ Irishtown ] there lives a girl, Rarer than the flower Im wearin` Rose Donahoe, all fresh and new, And I love her past all carin` And there she goes, My Ringsend rose, In Gods garden there none rarer, And there she goes, My Ringsend rose, Dublin town has seen none fairer. Three yards of lace, She walks with grace, And a golden ring shes askin`, The savings slow, ah but still I know, That our love is everlastin`, And there she goes, My Ringsend rose, In God`s garden there none rarer And there she goes, My Ringsend rose, Dublin town has seen none fairer, Dublin town has seen none fairer. Heres Brendan live in Killarney. Enjoy! Thank you so much!!!!! Hugs! Pat.
