ⓒRebecca Bugge, All Rights Reserved Do not use without permission. Just behind the high altar, looking into the Vasa chapel at Uppsala cathedral you will find a woman. She stands there every day - and every night long after the doors have been closed and locked. She is not a visitor, she is a sculpture. This is the art-piece 'Maria (Återkomsten)' (in English Mary (The Return)). She was made in 2005 by the artist Anders Widoff. The point of the sculpture was to return Mary, who after all is a central figure in Christian faith, to the church space where she once was well represented in imagery, but which have been removed over the centuries - mostly so after the Reformation. The artist wanted to present her in an as timeless appearance as possible , and around 45 years old, the age she would have had at the crucifixion.
