The British Advanced Passenger Train (APT) incorporated ground breaking technology that was eventually brought to the UK system commercially by Fiat of Italy. All the work undertaken by British Rail was eventually sold to Fiat Ferroriaria, who then sent it back to us in the shape of the Pendolino's. Developing such an advanced train was always going to present problems, which there were: the one problem that could not be overcome was the negative publicity provided by the British press. Ever true to their mantra, bad news sells newspapers, they feasted on any negative publicity surrounding the APT project. And so the Thatcher government scrapped it, and sold the technology to Fiat. Not our finest hour? On 19th April 1985, when the APT had been bought back into scheduled service, No. 370007 leads through Lichfield Trent Valley with a London Euston - Glasgow Central service.
