Vittorio Jano was one of the greatest competition car designers of all times. Initially joining Alfa Romeo from Fiat in 1923, Vittorio Jano was responsible for all Alfa Romeo Grand Prix cars from 1924-1937 (the P2 in 1924 which won the 1925 world championship, the Tipo B called the P3, the 8C-35 and the 12C-36), as well as for the Lancia Aurelia, the D23/D24 sports racing and the D50 Grand Prix cars after WWII. At the same time, Jano designed a succession of touring and sports cars, culminating in the 8C 2300 which featured the 2336 cc 8-cylinder supercharged engine from the Monza racing cars. The competition record of the 8C 2300 was outstanding, with wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans consecutively in 1931, 1932, 1933 and 1934, the Mille Miglia in 1932, 1933 and 1934, and many more victories on all the famous circuits in the world. The 8C 2300 is rated by many to be the greatest sports and racing car of all times. This particular car, the 1931 8C 2300 Mille Miglia Short Chassis Works Spider chassis number 2111006, is one of the 11 early 1931 Works cars, and one of only three examples originally built for Targa Florio and Mille Miglia with the very early bacquet style bodywork, featuring skimpy light bodywork and allowance for 2 spare wheels. In this form 2111006 ran as Alfa Corse team car in 1931, and, most importantly, won the Coppa Ciano with start number 8, the driver being no one less than Tazio Nuvolari. 2111006 will have raced in futher races in 1931, such as Targa Florio or Spa, but it is not entirely clear which of the team cars ran which race. Alfa Corse had decided to stop racing as a works team for the end of 1931, and all works cars were ultimately sold. 2111006 was sold to the Scuderia Ferrari in July 1931 (registered 5201 MO), and formed part of the Scuderia Ferrari Team for the complete 1932 season, participating in the following races : April 1932 : Mille Miglia, where Giulio Ramponi and Pietro Ghersi participated with race number 82, but were unfortunately involved in a crash May 1932 : Targa Florio, driven by Antonio Brivio, but DNF with race number 4 May 1932 : Coppa Messina where Pietro Ghersi claimed victory with race number 18 Throughout the thirties, 2111006 participated in various competition events with several subsequent owners, including the 1934 Mille Miglia with Pietro Santi/Lelio Pellegrini, and in 1936 Felice Bonetto, well-known racing driver of that period. In 1956, 2111006 was sold to American collector Ed Roy, through the intermediary of Belgium dealer de Dobeleer. Later owners include Rodney Felton (1974-1992), Bruce Vanyo (1992-1994), Alain de Cadenet (1994-1996), and since 1996, 2111006 has formed part of a private European collection. 2111006 is one of world's most significant 8C 2300 Alfa Romeo for the following reasons : -one of only 3 bacquet cars -Alfa Romeo Corse team car, then Scuderia Ferrari team car -Victory by Tazio Nuvolari -Monza-type chassis (carbon/nickel) 2.5 mm (normal spider heavier 3.0 mm) -Monza-type steering ratio 3.30 (normal spider ratio 3.33) -Mille Miglia-type stronger suspension (100 mm front springs, different mounting) -Very original car with important race history and continuous owner history
