Construction on the Great Stone Church was begun in 1797 and completed in 1806. On December 8, 1812, a powerful earthquake destroyed the church during service. Forty Two people lost their lives. Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1776, the seventh of twenty one California Missions. It remained a mission until 1833 when it was secularized by the Mexican Government. Restoration of the historic mission began in 1910, and today it is one of the top tourist sites in Orange County, California.
