#1 What were the top goals for this project When our clients first had the vision to create a senior living community in Phoenix, AZ it was an abandoned structure resembling an old parking garage. It was originally intended to be condominiums, with the recession leaving it unfinished. We had to work with existing structural elements such as load bearing walls, elevator and plumbing shafts, columns, and ceiling heights. Our clients wanted to highlight the surrounding historic Biltmore shopping mall and resort which was originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. They wanted the building to feel urban & modern with a unique offering of many aspects of a luxurious resort. We wanted the finishes to have a subtle elegance with accents of tangerine and soft lime green to compliment the beautiful surrounding mountain views and cityscapes The building offers 80 suites for assisted living, 30 suites devoted to individualized care for residents with memory impairments, and many wonderful amenities. #2 Please Provide any Data that illustrates how the project met its goals The first floor at Morning Star Arcadia features common areas including a living room with a custom fireplace design and a library featuring custom millwork and furnishings. There is also a self-service Bistro area offering refreshments for the residents and families. The main dining room offers a dining space with more formality giving a true high end dining experience and accommodates and promotes social gatherings. There is a private dining as well to accommodate more private parties and events suitable for family use. The fitness area provides a vibrant and energetic feel, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. The fully functioning salon offers a wonderfully playful yet luxurious feel allowing the residents to pamper themselves and relax. Pedicure, manicure, and massage, are all part of the salon services. The theater is a multifunctional space acting not only as a movie viewing area, but also as a chapel for the residents to attend services as they please. Morning Star focuses on spiritual growth as a part of the resident’s wellbeing. Due to the cost of real estate and limited common areas, it was critical to combine. The second floor is specialized memory care, offering a private dining, activity spaces, living rooms, and a beauty salon. Protected exterior balcony areas allow residents plenty of natural light and provide wonderful mountain and cityscape views. The third floor offers a multifunction space with the most incredible view yet. Residents can enjoy participating in activities while admiring the wonderful mountain views or at night the sparkling city lights. This space has a kitchen and custom shelves to store games and supplies. The Memory Care Area (second floor) provides the following quality of life and wellness opportunities for the residents. It features 3 living room areas with electric fireplaces, custom millwork, televisions, a salt water aquarium and comfortable lounge style seating arrangements. A beauty salon offers an adjustable sink providing ease and comfort for both staff and residents. This particular area also includes life skill accessories including rummage drawers in furnishings, interactive artwork, all conducive to residents with dementia. The artwork in the space is themed throughout with “memorable” subject matter to help guide residents through the space. #4 How does this project use design to improve residents’ independence? Everything about Morning Star Arcadia promotes wellness and quality of life for its residents. Every day there are planned activities, daily outings, along with the huge list of amenities the community has to offer. The main dining room with a culinary chef offers three meals a day with a menu driven design. There is a private dining room perfect for personal gathering and functions. This community allows residents to feel as though they are living in a luxurious resort giving them a convenient and active lifestyle. Residents are encouraged to congregate in the library and lounge, participate in group activities in the activity room and theater and chapel. Meal times in the main dining area become a social gathering giving residents a restaurant like experience to enjoy. There are beautiful patios areas for residents to sit outside and soak in the beautiful views and Arizona sunsets. #6 What sets this residence apart from other senior housing communiques?
