Billy Simpson, a Berea jeweler and inventor, began building a 4-wheeled, wood frame, 2-cylinder gasoline car in 1875. It was completed and running somewhere between 1898 and 1901, depending on which source you believe. It may be one of the earliest gasoline engined cars in the world • Built with hand tools and a foot-treadle powered lathe in a dirt floored barn. Several mechanical parts were locally cast. European ignition coils were purchased from Léon Rubay, a Paris, France distributor of electrical components. The wooden body is built in a piano case carriage style • Partially restored to running condition in 2005 by several Berea individuals & automotive service companies then driven, on oh-so-fragile wooden wheels, in Berea's 2006 Independence Day parade • That's a leather covered gas tank in front ot the steering tiller • If the tires look great, it's because they're not tires. Tires this size haven't been available in the past 75 years. These are heavy lengths of steel braided, 4-inch hydraulic hose, with the cut ends slipped over a short length of 2-inch hydraulic hose and secured with screws (see left front tire at 7-o'clock position). The ‘tires’ already show treadwear from the short 2006 parade route, plus a couple of hot laps in front of a row of local automotive shops. Current mechanical detail photos (please view Flickr copyright restrictions), restoration photos, older newspaper articles, and other documents may be available to publications wishing to showcase this remarkable and virtually unknown car. Berea believes the man, and car, deserve better press than his extremely short 1921 obituary.
