I'm quite happy to have captured this shot of a Grasshopper Sparrow perched on native plants. If you don't know, this species can be difficult to approach closely and they often even run underneath the prairie grass like a mouse! This was as close to a magical birding experience as I've had all year, being approximately 10 feet away from this tiny little bird and getting to observe it so closely all by myself while sitting on the ground. The plants making up the perch here are Penstemon grandiflorus or "Large beardtongue" (not blooming yet) and Ratibida pinnata or "Gray-headed Coneflower." The bird itself was only about 18 inches off the ground. Anoka County, MN 07/04/21
