Box Date: 1980 Condition Purchased: Used Missing Items: Stairs, shower, shower curtain, life ring hook, brush head, mask, pump ***Small accessories pictured separately Personal Fun Fact (written by my sister): I first encountered this a LOONG time before we bought it. I think this gorgeous item sat around on a shelf at our local flea market for at LEAST three years, maybe four. I remember seeing it ages ago and wanting to ask about it--it's from Shelly's favorite era of Barbie and similar in quality/construction to our 1979 Dreamhouse. Three things held me back: 1) It was hard to tell how complete/decent it actually was from the cardboard box. (It was in its original box, but the box is so damaged it wasn't worth photographing for our playset album.) 2) Because it was in a vintage box, I thought it might be over the moon pricey. Neither of these two things would've stopped me from at least inquiring, if not for--3) it was in the part of our flea market where a lot of stuff just sits for ages AND the sellers aren't right near their stuff and easily identifiable. It sat for ages and, every time when we actually went in I did a mental check to see whether or not it was still sitting, if the seller was easy to pick out, and if there was a price sticker of some kind on it. It sounds like a lot of pining and you'd think we'd have inquired about it sooner, but there are mitigating factors. First of all, I could write a VERY long list of dolly items we've "pined" over--so it was one of many things I contemplated in those three-ish years. Second of all, we rarely go into the actual building because the items don't change out much and most of the good stuff is outside. Additionally, if we've already bought anything substantial--expensive, bulky, or both--we don't go inside. And the year before we got this, the inside was weirdly corralled due to COVID and we didn't bother to go in until the season was nearly over. Lastly, I honestly didn't see it moving away out of my reach anytime soon--it was in "no man's land" as I think of it--the part of the flea market where stuff kind of just sits for eons. I sort of hoped it would be OURS someday. I also figured, the longer it sat, the better our chances of getting it for how much we wanted to pay were. I'm pretty sure this changed hands a few times--it definitely moved areas, but it never left the flea market. The forces aligned in just the right way for us to finally take this home in April 2021! All opening weeks are memorable, for some reason, whether you leave with a pile of stuff and an empty wallet (like the "Ken Suitcase"/American Girl Lindsey haul) or just two Barbies (like in 2012). 2021 was no exception. Because it was chilly/misty, even our regulars hadn't come back and we figured, since we hadn't spent a dime yet, we'd wander indoors. The guy who had it (we believe he'd come into possession of it sort of recently--whether it was the year earlier like I thought or just that week like Shelly thought) also had the LOL Glamper. The Glamper, while a much newer and honestly less impressive item, already had a HUGE tug on our heartstrings--it was watching THAT commercial that made Shelly go gaga for LOL. The Glamper was sitting VERY close to this. In that moment, I thought, maybe, just maybe, we could score BOTH. At any rate, a two for one sort of hassle made it totally worth tracking down the seller. Once we located him, we bought the Glamper for $20--we didn't even open it because we knew it was a decent deal. This though, we did look through prior to buying for $30--only because we had no way of knowing what was actually in the box. I'm actually surprised by how much WAS in the box. As you can see, it's not missing much. Also, there were four dolls--three Barbies and a cute Ken (I'd have tried harder to get this sooner if I knew someone was LIVING in it)--AND a few pieces to our 1979 Dreamhouse! We couldn't tell all that from our cursory glance though. It was a PAIN to set this up without instructions. This was SUCH a great find. I've wanted a pool like this since not long after we got seriously back into doll collecting and spent a lot of time ogling playsets on eBay. I LOVE the deck! It has so much play value. This is honestly the pool I had in mind when I set up the My Story Christie photo. It was up in my brain. This is my favorite pool we have--although our Fashion Doll Backyard Pool Set is VERY close. (It comes with a dining table, impressive lawn furniture, and weird things I like like the cardboard fence.) Actually, I think the deck furniture from that set, paired with this superior pool, would be PERFECT. The best of both worlds. This pool has an uber fabulous deck that you can actually put lawn furniture and even a little grill on. The other set just has better small stuff. I'm a little sad this is missing the stairs--for aesthetic/photography purposes--but not too bummed about the shower. Who needs a shower at their pool? It seems silly/weird. Not that I'd complain if we HAD the shower. Anyway, this pool is great! The tub portion is honestly reminiscent of a massive barf bucket--but it DOES have the Barbie logo on the inside. What I like is the fact that it is sturdy and not a flimsy inflatable pool and that it is BIG. This is perfect for hours of dolly fun!
