The Postcard A 'Collo Colour' Series postcard that was published by Valentine & Sons Ltd. of Dundee and London. The card was posted in Wellingborough on Tuesday the 7th. June 1960 to: Mrs. O.E. Digby, Homeview, Buxton, Norwich, Norfolk. The message on the divided back of the card was as follows: "Tuesday. Having a lovely time. We went to Rugby yesterday. The weather couldn't be better, although we had a slight thunder storm on Sunday evening, but not much rain. Love Janice". Caldecott Park Caldecott Park is located in the centre of Rugby, England. Most of the 11 acres of land was purchased by the Rugby Urban District Council in 1903 from Thomas Caldecott, the last lord of the manor. The park has changed a lot over time. There used to be an ornamental lake in the centre of the park, but that was filled in 1922. The Second World War saw the removal of a floral staircase as well as the original iron park railings which were taken away as part of the war effort. The 1970's saw the loss of many of the trees in the park to Dutch Elm Disease. However, in the 1990's there has been a programme of tree replanting. Also in 1996, a series of entertainment events were organised over the summer months. These have continued since, and there are also craft fairs, art exhibitions and musical performances on the bandstand. Other attractions include a children's play area, tennis courts, a bowling green and a small kiosk which sells refreshments. Now, to celebrate Saint Georges Day, scouts march from Caldecott park to St Andrews Church. A Bomarc Missile Explosion So what else happened on the day that Janice posted the card? Well, on the 17th. June 1960, a BOMARC missile and its nuclear warhead caught fire at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. Although a liquid helium tank in the missile exploded, and the warhead was melted by the fire, there was no risk of a nuclear blast in the Philadelphia area. The accident did however cause a spillage of plutonium, and the contaminated areas were subsequently encased under asphalt and concrete. Ronald Reagan Also on that day, Ronald Reagan resigned as President of the Screen Actors Guild.
