Reverend Ito: Hello from the Presidential Palace in Baghdad, Iraq. The contrasts of this "palace" are mirrored throughout this City of Baghdad. I can't decide who is more absurd, the US "coalition" or what's left of the Iraqi society. The hubris shown by the US government continues in making this City and Country a hell-on-earth. I continue to try to make a difference at my level. Small things; person-to-person. The Iraqi people are friendly. Their values are good and they will survive this. There are many different "Ministries" here; Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, etc. Well, I've proclaimed myself the Minister of Good Will. It's a tough job, but I'm out there doing my best, one person at a time. I would like to come back here sometime and see the changes I know will come. I'm sure they will come in time. I find quiet places here to write. I've seen some beautiful scenes and beautiful people. I go up on the roof of the palace at sunset from time-to-time and I can hear the evening call to prayers. It is so beautiful and a pleasant reminder of the life and strength of the Iraqi people so close by our fortified compound. The US military stands between me and Baghdad. That will probably continue for all of my time here. I hope not. Our trips out to do damage assessments are the highlights of my day. I am in good health and great spirits. The Buddha is with me. The Dharma is with me. The Sangha is with me. Please give my best to all.
