I remember pumping gas in my parent's car and even my car with pumps just like this one all the time back in the day. You'd pick up the pump handle, flip a lever either side to side, or up straight, and the machine would immediately buzz to life. You'd see all the number wheels spin to reset back to a $0.00 sale, and the pump was ready to get to work for it's next customer. The loud humm of this old stye pump only ceased when you flipped the lever back to the Off position. Of course, back in the day, drive-offs without paying were much rarer than they can be today, so after you pumped your gas, you'd go pay the attendant, usually in cash. Today, machines like these still in use are sure not common, at least in the tri-state area around Hagerstown, MD. Once in a blue moon you'll see an old station still open for business, rocking some classics like this. But more and more, they are replaced by digital pumps, with the ability to accept credit cards. And of course.......no more pumping then paying. You either pay or you don't pump now. Funny how an object like this old rusty gas pump can conjure up old memories. So for me, I had to capture this moment before such a place is wiped out of memory for good.
