Pianist/composer Reuben Brown, born 1939, died 10 January 2018, at age 78. ****************** Ice Scape Audio CD (1997) Label: SteepleChase Catalog No.: SCCD 31423 Format: Import Number of Discs: 1 [Rear cover: here.] ☞ Personnel: Reuben Brown: piano Rufus Reid: bass Billy Hart: drums ************** ☞ "Reuben Brown, from Washington, D.C., is one of those regional musicians who should be far better known, but family responsibilities dictated that much of his career has been spent in D.C. However, he is something of a legend among fellow players and is highly regarded by soloists of the calibre of Milt Jackson, Ira Sullivan, Joe Henderson, and many others. Brown does not believe in going through the motions, running the changes mechanically when interpreting any piece. Rather than resorting to such superficiality, he brings to his task a vision specific for each selection.[...] What he gives us is a series of deeply-felt and beautifully conceived vignettes in which fake excitement has no place. [...] Reuben Brown does not regard good music as either a panacea or as a facet of consumerism. 'Much of my time is spent thinking about music. That's a lost art today,' he says." — Mark Gardner (liner notes) *************** ☞ "Some people are nice out of a kind of tenderness but Reuben has a kind of benevolence that comes from a position of strength. He's a powerful artist and very philosophical -- extremely so -- but he's also very kind. I've only known four or five musicians like that in my life, including John Coltrane." — Billy Hart ☞ "He's just incredible," said Harper of Brown's gifts as a composer. "He has this extensive harmonic sense and an ability to get right to the beauty of the music." — Winard Harper ☞ "Jazz, it's been said, is the sound of surprise, but pianist Reuben Brown has always been something of a constant -- a musician and composer known for his unwavering excellence." — Mike Joyce Washington Post 13 September 1995. *************** ▶ Photo by Yours For Good Fermentables.com. ▶ For a larger image, type 'L' (without the quotation marks). — Follow on Twitter: @Cizauskas. — Follow on Facebook: YoursForGoodFermentables. — Follow on Instagram: @tcizauskas. ▶ Camera: Olympus Pen E-PL1. ▶ Commercial use requires explicit permission, as per Creative Commons.
