Ledell Lee on topic
Ledell T. Lee (July 31, 1965 – April 20, 2017) was an African-American man in Arkansas executed for the 1993 murder of his neighbor, Debra Reese. He was convicted in 1995 and the Arkansas Supreme Court affirmed the conviction in 1997, but numerous questions have been raised about the justice of his trial and post-conviction representation. Issues have included conflict of interest for the judge, inebriation of counsel, and ineffective defense counsel. After being arrested in the Reese case, Lee was prosecuted for other crimes. He was convicted of the rape of two women in Jacksonville in 19xx. Prosecution for charges of a 1989 rape and murder against another woman resulted in a hung jury. The state has had issues with procuring drugs needed for the primary means of execution: lethal injection. The drugs are manufactured in Europe, and the European Union has prohibited their export to the US for use in executions. Wanting to proceed with using stocks of the lethal injection drug before they expired, the state denied Lee's defense motion to have DNA testing conducted of evidence collected in 1993.
