U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill met today with Brock Long, President Trump’s nominee to become the next Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which leads the federal government’s emergency management and prevention efforts. “As many Missourians focus on recovering from this year’s historic flooding, it’s critically important that FEMA is staffed up and prepared to help folks in our state rebuild after disasters,” McCaskill said. “Mr. Long has a long history in emergency management, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to talk to him directly about what Missouri communities need as they recover and prepare for future events.” Long previously served as Director of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency and Regional Hurricane Program Manager for FEMA. The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold his confirmation hearing tomorrow. Last week, President Trump approved a federal disaster declaration for Missouri communities recovering from recent flooding, after McCaskill and Senator Roy Blunt sent a bipartisan letter in support of Governor Eric Greitens’ request for a disaster declaration. As the top-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, McCaskill has also backed legislation to require FEMA to create easily accessible online grant training for first responders taking into account the time and financial pressures many fire departments face, particularly those in rural areas.
