This plant, identified as elderberry (Sambucus nigra) by a couple of commenters, is pretty common in Upstate South Carolina, along roads. It grows to a couple of meters/yards tall, and the flowering heads are good-sized, as large, or larger, than a dinner plate. See here for a photo showing the flowers more closely: The Wikipedia tells me that elderberry flowers, and the fruit, are eaten by some people, but the fruit, or juice, should be cooked first, as the uncooked material can be toxic. Thanks for looking! Isn't God a great artist?
