Bonnie and Clyde were shot to death in an ambush on a rural road in the middle of nowhere. More than 100 bullets from automatic rifles, shotguns and pistols were fired into their car to make sure they were indeed dead. After being hunted for more than 2 years the world needed to know of their death. With no cell phones or radio service the world would have to wait while posse leader Frank Hamer drove 8 miles of country road into the nearest town - Gibsland, Lousiana. Luckily the retired Texas Ranger found an outdoor payphone at the gas station. From here he called his bosses in Dallas to let them know the hunt was over. Soon the public would know that the story of the legendary couple had reached its final chapter. The date was May 23, 1934. This is the gas station from which the famous call was made. The payphone itself now resides inside a museum a block away.
